art exhibit

special event materials

PROBLEM

The University of the Incarnate Word Art Department were hosting an art exhibit for one of their art professors, Andy Villareal. They wanted special event materials that would appeal to students and convey clearly the theme around his work.

approach

Since all of his works were influence by Mayan culture, I had to do a bit of research to see their artworks to analyze their use of colors and shapes. A lot of the artwokrs and illustrations I found were very colorful, so I knew I had to start in grayscale to be mindful of the color values.

I eventually had access to Andy's art pieces that were going to be displayed in the university's galleries, and found shapes and patterns being repeated across his work.

Solution

To design a collateral that will best represent his exhibit, I took those repetitive elements and colors from his art works, and converted them into design elements to be used across the special event materials.

Andy Villareal ended up loving this concept and expressed the deatils it went into the design, especially the use of texture on the graphics. The special event materials also appealed to a lot of the university students, encouraging attendance to Andy's opening reception.
